A R T and science

GENEMUSIC / TURKU CATHEDRAL
“Any molecule, if You look at it at the nano-scale, has continuous vibrations” (MIT / Buehler).

During my sound-art studies, I transformed a special genetic code to a simple melody. This gene works for energy transmission in cells and is therefore vital for all life. Without it, there would be no air nor soil, no seed nor child, no art nor science.

This gene was presumably part of The LUCA ( The Last Universal Common Ancestor ) – an embryo of all life on Earth from some 3.5 billion years ago. The gene is still here in every living cell, in every living plant and creature, and will be as long as the sun lets the earth be.

The intonation of the melody is a measurement result of it. I used audio software, which converts the text of a DNA sequence to a MIDI file.

This audio structure of an ancient molecule has been composed for organs by organist Arttu Selonen. A tiny molecule filled the whole church with its unique intonation of life and You are welcome to listen and feel it in your cells.

It has chimed through organs in Turku Cathedral 2019, at the opening of Lahti Organ Festival 2022 in Church of the Cross and in Lieto at Village Church Littoinen 2024.
It has echoed through QR-codes in summer 2020 during bioart-exhibition at Vanhalinna museum and 2021 at the Turunlinna castle yard.

H o m i n i This 4,5 m long installation of measures displays the length of the Life on earth and every millimeter is million years. The golden thread represents us humans as a specie in this segment of evolution and time. We have been here only few hundred thousand years - not even a millimeter.
